In early March 2020, Chicago United for Equity knew that information about COVID-19 and the resulting policies would not be equitably accessible across the city. In particular, they wanted to make this information available to Chicagoans who don’t speak English primarily or at all, and those who might be more likely to get their news via SMS or social media. To bridge this gap, CUE contracted me to develop a series of explainer illustrations with actionable information about COVID-19, which could easily be shared via WhatsApp or SMS. I managed a team of illustrators (Bianca Xunise, Arabella Breck, and Natalie González in image order) and translators to make these image series available in 12 languages (Urdu, Spanish, Chinese, English, Mixteco Alto and Punjabi shown above).
